Every year, Sri Lankan candidates with signed German training contracts and genuine qualifications are rejected at the German Embassy in Colombo. The reason is almost never the application itself. It is the file. A missing apostille on a police clearance. A self-translated birth certificate. A name spelling that differs by one letter between the passport and the educational certificate.
Germany's Ausbildung visa (formally the Visum zur Berufsausbildung, §16a AufenthG) is one of the most structured and clearly defined visa categories in the German Residence Act. The requirements are published, the process is sequential, and the outcome is predictable when the preparation is correct.
For Sri Lankan candidates, the Ausbildung pathway is one of the most realistic routes to a life in Germany. You receive a salary from day one, gain a state-recognised German qualification after two to three years, and have a clear legal path to permanent residency. This guide covers every step, from securing a training place to collecting your visa, so you avoid the mistakes that delay most applications.
The Ausbildung visa is issued under §16a of the German Residence Act (Aufenthaltsgesetz, AufenthG). It permits a third-country national, including Sri Lankan passport holders, to enter Germany and complete a state-recognised vocational training programme (anerkannte Berufsausbildung). The visa is issued for the full duration of the training contract, typically two to three years. During this period you are entitled to: reside legally in Germany, work at your training company (four to five days per week), attend vocational school (Berufsschule, one to two days per week), and receive a legally guaranteed minimum training salary. After completing your Ausbildung: you receive an 18-month job-seeking permit (Aufenthaltserlaubnis zur Arbeitsuche). After working in your trained field for two subsequent years, you become eligible for permanent residency (Niederlassungserlaubnis) under §18b AufenthG, one of the most direct PR routes available to non-EU nationals. The Ausbildung visa covers more than 325 state-recognised professions across healthcare, hospitality, logistics, retail, IT, and technical trades. (Source: BIBB, 2026). The most in-demand sectors for Sri Lankan candidates are nursing and elderly care (Pflegefachkraft), hotel and restaurant management (Hotelfachmann/Hotelfachfrau), electrical installation (Elektroniker), and retail business (Kaufmann/Kauffrau im Einzelhandel).
The Ausbildung visa application cannot begin without two things already in place. These are not documents you collect at the end; they are the foundation on which the entire application rests. Without both, the German Embassy in Colombo will not process your file.
The process below applies specifically to Sri Lankan nationals applying through the German Embassy in Colombo, which processes applications via VFS Global. The steps are sequential; completing them out of order adds delays and, in some cases, requires restarting stages.
The following list reflects standard requirements of the German Embassy in Colombo. Requirements do change; always verify the current list on colombo.diplo.de before your appointment. Prepare two complete, collated sets: VFS retains one, returns the other.
The B1 German language requirement for the Ausbildung visa is not arbitrary; it is set at B1 because that is the minimum level at which a candidate can functionally participate in the vocational school curriculum. German Berufsschulen (vocational schools) teach entirely in German. The theoretical component of your Ausbildung, one to two days per week, involves written exams, class participation, and practical assignments, all in German. A candidate below B1 cannot pass these examinations.
On the practical side, your training company needs you to understand team briefings, safety instructions, customer interactions, and performance feedback from day one. The BIBB reported in 2023 that fewer than 1 in 5 international Ausbildung applicants met language expectations at application stage; this is the single biggest filter in employer selection. B2 changes the picture substantially. At B2, you can follow nuanced professional communication, write reports in your field, handle customer complaints, and engage naturally in team discussions. Most healthcare and hospitality employers require B2 as a practical minimum; the B1 requirement is for the visa, not for the employer. Candidates who apply with B2 certificates secure better-quality training contracts in better-quality companies.

The realistic timeline from zero to B1 is 10–14 months with 10–15 hours of structured study per week. The additional push to B2 takes 4–6 more months.
Accepted language certificates for the Ausbildung visa: Goethe-Zertifikat B1, ÖSD Zertifikat B1, telc Deutsch B1, or DSH (for university pathways). The Goethe-Institut Sri Lanka (goethe.de/ins/lk/en) in Colombo conducts official examinations. IELTS and TOEFL are not accepted for this visa category.
One of the most common questions from Sri Lankan candidates is what the Ausbildung actually pays. The answer depends on the sector and the individual training company, but there is a legally guaranteed minimum across all professions.
Since 2020, Germany's Berufsbildungsgesetz (Vocational Training Act) has set statutory minimum training salaries. For 2026, these are: Year 1: €724/month, Year 2: €766/month, Year 3: €837/month. Most candidates who start from scratch (no German, no employer contact yet) take 18–24 months to complete the full process. Candidates who already hold a B1 certificate and are actively applying to German employers typically secure a training place and visa within 6–12 months. The biggest variable is language.
