For most Sri Lankan candidates aged 18–35 without a university degree, the Ausbildung (vocational training) visa offers the clearest path to long-term residency. For those with qualifications, the Skilled Worker Visa or the Opportunity Card (Chancenkarte) may be more appropriate. The right choice depends on your age, education, German level, and career goals.
The Chancenkarte, introduced in 2024, is a points-based job-seeking visa that allows qualified candidates from non-EU countries to enter Germany for up to one year to find employment, without needing a job offer first. Points are awarded for education, German language level, work experience, and age. It's a significant route for Sri Lankan graduates with professional backgrounds.

From completing your documents to receiving a visa decision, the process typically takes 3–6 months. This includes document preparation (4–8 weeks), obtaining a German Embassy appointment in Colombo (currently 2–4 months ahead), and embassy processing time (4–12 weeks). Starting preparation early is strongly recommended.
The exact list depends on your visa type, but most German visa applications require: valid passport, recent biometric photos, birth certificate (with apostille), educational certificates (with certified German translation), German language certificate, police clearance report, proof of financial support or training contract, and the completed visa application form.
