A German training coordinator in a hospital in Nuremberg receives 140 applications for eight Ausbildung places in nursing. She has two hours on a Tuesday afternoon to make a shortlist. She opens the first letter: "I have always dreamed of living in Germany and I am a passionate, hardworking person who loves to help others." She moves to the next file.
That is not a harsh hiring manager. That is a professional doing her job. The Motivationsschreiben sits at the top of your application, and most international candidates, including many from Sri Lanka, write exactly what she has already read a hundred times.
This guide shows you what to write in each section of a strong Motivationsschreiben, what to avoid, and how a well-structured letter actually reads. There is a full German-language example at the bottom of this page.
What a German Motivationsschreiben Is and Why It Matters
A Motivationsschreiben is a formal cover letter sent with your Ausbildung application. In Germany, it is not optional. It is the document that answers the employer's first question: why do you want to train with us, specifically, in this profession?
German training companies receive dozens or hundreds of applications per open position. The Motivationsschreiben is the filter. A strong one gets you an interview. A weak one ends your application regardless of your qualifications.
For international candidates, the stakes are higher. A German company taking on a foreign Ausbildung candidate is making a significant commitment: they are sponsoring your training, absorbing your integration into the team, and betting on your staying power. They need to see that you understand what Ausbildung is, that you are serious about Germany, and that you have thought carefully about why this specific profession and this specific company match your goals.
The Correct Structure for an Ausbildung Motivationsschreiben
A German Motivationsschreiben follows a formal business letter structure. Deviating from this structure signals that you do not understand German professional norms, which is a red flag for any employer considering an international candidate.
- Header block. Your name, address, phone number, and email on the left. The company name, contact person name if known, department, and address on the right. The date directly below.
- Subject line. Clear and specific: "Bewerbung um einen Ausbildungsplatz als [Exact Profession Name] ab [Start Month Year]". Use the exact profession title as listed in the job posting.
- Opening paragraph. Address the contact person by name where possible (Sehr geehrte Frau Müller / Sehr geehrter Herr Schmidt). One to two sentences stating what you are applying for and your strongest, most specific reason for doing so. Do not open with "Ich bewerbe mich um..." as this is already clear from the subject line. Open with the reason why this company or profession specifically.
- Why this profession section. Two to three focused sentences. Connect your background, skills, or experiences directly to what the profession requires. Use concrete examples, not adjectives. "Seit zwei Jahren arbeite ich in der Dorfapotheke meiner Familie" is stronger than "Ich bin eine fleißige und engagierte Person."
- Why this company section. One to two sentences that show you researched the company. Reference something real: their training reputation, their sector, a specific project, or their values as described on their website. Generic praise is visible and damaging.
- Your qualifications and language section. State your education, your German level with the certificate name and date. Be precise: "Goethe-Zertifikat B2, erworben im März 2025" not "Ich spreche gut Deutsch."
- Practical matters. If relevant: your visa status, your availability date, and your flexibility regarding relocation. German employers want to know there are no hidden complications.
- Closing and sign-off. One sentence expressing that you look forward to a personal interview. Then: "Mit freundlichen Grüßen" followed by your full name.
Phrases That Work and Why German Employers Respond to Them
German professional culture values precision, directness, and evidence over enthusiasm. The most effective Motivationsschreiben sentences follow a simple pattern: claim plus specific evidence.
This is specific and self-evidencing.
This shows research and stated long-term intent.
This addresses the employer's main concern directly.
This removes a common source of uncertainty for the employer.
What Loses You the Ausbildung Place Before the Interview
These mistakes appear in the majority of motivation letters from international candidates. Each one signals to the German employer that the candidate did not prepare seriously.
- Opening with your desire to leave Sri Lanka: "Ich möchte in Deutschland leben und eine bessere Zukunft aufbauen." German employers are running a training programme, not a migration service. Your desire to leave is not a qualification.
- Unverifiable adjectives: "Ich bin fleißig, zuverlässig und lernbereit." These sentences appear in every application. Replace every adjective with a specific example.
Employers can see through this immediately.
- German language errors: A letter claiming B2 level that contains grammar errors tells the employer your B2 claim is overstated. If your German is not ready, prepare further before applying. MALIROSA works with candidates at the writing stage specifically.
- Wrong length: More than one A4 page is too long. Fewer than three substantive paragraphs is too short. One full page, structured clearly, is the target.
- No knowledge of the profession: Candidates who cannot describe what their Ausbildung actually involves fail immediately. Read the full Ausbildungsordnung (training regulations) for your chosen Beruf before you write a single sentence.
A Motivationsschreiben That Actually Works: A Real Example
Below is a model Motivationsschreiben for an Ausbildung position in nursing (Pflegefachkraft). It is written in formal German at B2 level. Read it carefully, then notice what is not in it: no mention of dreams, no vague enthusiasm, no generic praise. Every sentence does specific work.

Malini Perera

Notice what this letter does: it opens with a concrete scene from professional experience, not a personal desire. The company-specific paragraph references a real, researchable detail (intercultural teams). The language section states the certificate name and date. Availability and visa status are stated without being asked. Every sentence earns its place.
A note on translation: this letter is intentionally written in German, because that is the standard. If your German is not yet at the level to write something comparable, that is your signal to keep training. Your Motivationsschreiben is a live demonstration of the German language skills you are claiming.
How MALIROSA Prepares International Candidates for Ausbildung Applications
Writing a strong Motivationsschreiben in a second language at a high professional standard is genuinely difficult. Most candidates who attempt it alone produce a letter that reads like a translated version of a Sri Lankan application, which does not work with German training coordinators.
MALIROSA works with candidates at each stage: identifying the right Ausbildung pathway for their profile, preparing their German to the required level, and coaching the writing of application documents. Robert Saiger brings direct experience of the German employment and training system. Randima Saiger brings understanding of where Sri Lankan candidates need the most support in bridging communication styles.
The goal is a letter that reads like it was written by a candidate who genuinely understands the Ausbildung system, researched the company, and is ready to contribute from day one. That standard is achievable with proper preparation.
