Until May 2026, Sri Lankan candidates had one option for a German language exam accepted by German embassies: the Goethe-Institut in Colombo. That changed. The OSD (Osterreichisches Sprachdiplom Deutsch, Austria's nationally mandated German language diploma) officially launched in Sri Lanka through GRMAN.lk as the registered test centre. OSD stands for Osterreichisches Sprachdiplom Deutsch, the Austrian Language Diploma German. It was established in 1994 under the Austrian Federal Ministry of Education and has since grown into one of the largest German language certification bodies in the world, operating in over 90 countries. The exams are aligned to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR), covering levels A1 through C2. They are accepted by German and Austrian embassies worldwide as proof of German language proficiency for visa applications, including the Ausbildung visa, the Skilled Worker Visa (Fachkrafteeinwanderung), and family reunion visas. The format was revised in 2019. A key feature of that revision: most exam modules can now be taken individually. The ÖSD offers exams across all six CEFR levels, with several variants at each level for different age groups and professional contexts. The table below shows the main adult exams most relevant for Sri Lankan candidates.
For most Sri Lankan candidates targeting Germany, the most important levels are B1 (required for many Ausbildung and work visa applications) and B2 (required for skilled worker visas and competitive Ausbildung contracts in fields like nursing, IT, and engineering). Start your preparation with your target level and visa pathway in mind.
All ÖSD exams test the four core language skills defined by the CEFR: Lesen (Reading), Hören (Listening), Schreiben (Writing), and Sprechen (Speaking). At most levels, the written exam combines Reading, Listening, and Writing into one sitting, while Speaking is a separate oral module.
At B1 and C2 specifically, all four skills are tested as individual modules. Each module can be taken separately or in combination. To receive the full certificate, you must pass all modules. The pass mark is 60% per module; falling below 60% in any single module means that module is not passed, even if your overall average is higher. (Source: osd.at, 2026)
You can retake individual failed modules; you do not have to resit the whole exam. If you pass Reading, Listening, and Writing but fail Speaking, only the Speaking module needs to be retaken. This significantly reduces the cost and time pressure of a second attempt. (Source: osd.at, 2026)
Both certificates are accepted by German embassies worldwide for visa applications. Neither is "better" in legal terms. They carry equal weight in visa processes. The choice comes down to practical factors: exam schedule, centre location, fees, and which format suits your preparation style.
Austrian and German exam bodies have slightly different question styles and text topics. Candidates who have prepared specifically for one format sometimes find the other style less familiar. If you are starting from scratch, choose based on exam availability and cost at your level. If you have already been preparing for Goethe exams, continue. Do not switch providers mid-preparation unless you have a specific reason.

The single biggest mistake candidates make is underestimating how many structured study hours each level requires. Watching German videos is useful exposure. It does not replace systematic grammar study, timed writing practice, and speaking sessions with feedback.
These are total guided hours from zero. If you already hold an A2 certificate, you need roughly 150 to 200 additional hours to reach B1, not the full 350. Work from your current level, not from zero.
